Steve hesitates only briefly when he gets the invitation to Phillip Coulson's wake. Much as he wants to keep his distance from SHIELD right now - much as their private arsenal of HYDRA weaponry still weighs on his mind like a bad dream - in the end, his comfort is a nominal consideration in honoring the fallen agent. When Steve finds out they're putting together a collection of gifts to bury with Coulson, he knows exactly what to bring.

Which is how he ended up on the currently-grounded helicarrier, several miles off the coast of New York. Even so soon after the disaster that nearly crashed the thing, repairs are well underway. Going on even while belowdecks, endless ranks of mourners mingle between refreshment tables sharing stories about an agent some of them never met but all of them knew. Steve keeps to himself, made anonymous by his own suit and tie - his dress uniform, though technically appropriate, didn't seem to suit the occasion.

It doesn't take more than three circles through the room to see that the person he's been keeping an eye out for isn't present. It doesn't take more than three seconds after that to realize where she must be.

He makes his way out of the crowd and downward, into the quiet, into the parts of the ship deemed nonessential or needing special construction. The areas put on the waiting list for repairs. The detention level is empty. The only prisoner of real note was Loki - the rest have been moved to secure facilites until the helicarrier is in one piece again. Steve stops in the doorway to the Hulk room and raps his knuckles on the wall. The last thing he wants right now is to take Darcy Lewis by surprise.
